Surfing is one of the favored pastimes in San Vicente, Palawan. After all, with waves as fierce as Siargao, it’s no surprise that the destination has been declared as Palawan’s Surfing Capital. Since 2020, the San Vicente LGU has held the Paragua Surfing Competition as a way of promoting tourism in the area. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic putting it on hold since 2021, the competition came back stronger and fiercer than ever this year and Sunlight Air was more than happy to be in San Vicente to witness it!

The Paragua Surfing Competition

This year’s Paragua Surfing Competition, which was organized by the United Tourism Enterprise Association (UNITEA) with the aid of numerous sponsors, was held from January 18-22, 2023 at San Vicente’s very own Barangay Alimanguan. As its beach is still part of San Vicente’s famed Long Beach, the waves were more than suitable for the exciting sporting event. Categories in the competition included Men’s Shortboard Open, Men’s Longboard Open, Women’s Longboard Open, and Junior’s Longboard Open. In the end, four victors from each category prevailed, the majority of which hailed from Puerto Princesa and the country’s Suring Capital, Siargao.

During the competition, spectators and participants were also able to enjoy themselves with the wide variety of stalls that were situated along the beach, which included henna tattoo artists, ATV rentals, and even clothing stalls. Food stalls such as Bestea Milktea, Mango Bar and Restaurant, and Puerto Princesa’s Cafe Moto 100% also set up shop along Alimanguan beach to serve whatever cravings visitors may have during the event.

As the event’s official airline carrier, Sunlight Air were given a very warm welcome in San Vicente, which also allowed them to be able to make their presence known at the competition. Not only did they delight the residents of San Vicente with a sale and a free sando giveaway that lasted throughout the entire event but the champions of each of the competition’s categories were also given roundtrip tickets from Manila to San Vicente for two.
